Letters concerning Subject Nilus to Subject Celsus
Most Esteemed Sire,
I cannot help but once again stress that once again my dear broodbrother Gaius has managed to fail our standards, while these standards may be somewhat exacting for mortals and immortals alike, this is but one in many such incidents that have occurred over the last few decades since his embrace. This latest incident saw not only a brawl with one of the Cappadocians of some import (even if he is but a frank), but it also saw a display of debauchery and hedonism the likes of which make his mortal days look tame. And in public no less!
Normally I would not question your wisdom sire, but it is quickly becoming clear that Gaius cannot control himself and that he is nothing but a detriment to the reputation of the Obertus. I also cannot help but further stress my worries that the debauchery of Vykos are influencing him through association and that the two appear to be planning something, just the other day, I was selected for some task that was not specified but the implications that I could gather fill me with a certain amount of dread. In light of recent events, I think it would be best that he be cast from this monastery; he is clearly unfit for the cloistered life.

Dear Nilus,
I can understand your concern as to the state of Gaius's soul, but remember that we are all damned in the grace of God and that it is not merely through ritual and austerity that we will be able to transcend these chains of curse and sin that have been weighted upon us. Young Gaius's deeds are indeed troubling and his baser urges are often worrying, however, one has to remember that it has been some years since he suffered a lapse in his control of this severity.
Further, Nilus, you must consider that I am far from unaware of his actions. Unlike many of the Brotherhood and the Kindred in the city seem to believe, I am not some fool who is unaware of his childers actions. In fact, I was aware of them long before any others of our number.
You must remember Nilus that your fervour and faith are strong, you were born and raised within these walls and as such have not had to deal with the devils lures or adapt to this life style. Your knowledge of scripture and ritual is strong, but you often fail to understand the importance of forgiveness and redemption in the teachings. Gaius has made significant progress since his embrace, and his recent usefulness to our wise elders proves his capabilities.
As for your opinions on Vkyos, I would like to remind you of your place in this brotherhood, and that you should keep your opinions and criticisms to yourself. It is not your place to question the grand-childer of Gesu, nor is it your place to judge your brothers and superiors, especially when they plan on setting you tasks. I have been infinitely patient with your little feud with Gaius, but your continued protestations are beginning to try even the patience of one such as me. Remember this.

I awoke just as the sun slipped beneath the horizon this morning. I was plagued my nightmares as usual during my sleep, they have grown far more intense since my recent lapse of control. Each time I sleep I see what awaits me in the afterlife, I see the billowing flames of the pit, smell the sulphur on the air and hear the cacophony of the damned screaming. As always I am chained, imprisoned, tormented and tortured over and over again for my sins and debauchery. Before my embrace, I would never have thought that a mere night terror could be so intense, how foolish I was. When I awoke this eve, I was wearing the appearance of someone of slavic origin, after three decades this ceases to be particularly strange, however I always feel somewhat uncomfortable wearing another's appearance.
After correcting my form, I began with that evenings rites and punishments, as instructed by my sire. For my lack of control, I must wear the wounds of my flagellation for the next few weeks to remind me of the price on my soul that my debauchery places on me. It pains me to think that I managed to fall so far, after managing to keep them in check for so long. However, these are the regrets of the past, and I am locked firmly in the present.
I continue to carry out my appointed task, I have been placing mortals and animals to watch the sewer entrances to the monastery, while me and my revenant retainer attend to the business of searching the library for any other entrances. The books continue to disappear at a prestigious rate, I find this intensely worrying as it means that either our intruders are intensely familiar with our defences and methods, or that we a collaborator among our midst. I fear it may be both. Alas, only time and perseverance shall tell.

My most esteemed Sire
It has not been so long since I have left our homeland, and yet it seems as if it has been much longer. My travels have granted me the time to reflect on our relationship, and the way in which you connect me to God. I thought I should therefore write down my musings and send them back to you.
I have seen the way in which others worship, and find it meaningless to sit down and idly watch as someone dictates what you must know from a book no one else can read. Only by living, suffering and surviving can one act as a testament to the strength and love of God, only by striving and attaining what others fail to see before them can one get closer to understanding that which will set us free. In His name, I hope I have not misunderstood what you have taught me. You set me free so that I may learn this truth, and I was wrong to doubt your wisdom.
My early years were troubled, and I think that I have finally put those difficulties behind, and look forwards to the next test of faith, quietly confident I shall overcome adversity slowly and effectively. I wish you would share with me the reason for sending peacock feathers; I will not believe you wish me ill luck, but their meaning is somewhat lost on me. Please write soon and enlighten me.

Moved by the anger at the activities of the Emperor Alexius and his father Isaac, the people of the city rose up against him. Many of his loyal Varangian guards were killed. Alexius Ducas, convincing many that they should leave the Boucoleon Palace and set up their battle lines on the Theodosian Walls captured the now empty palace and installed his own guards there. The young Emperor Alexius IV and his father were taken prisoner and held in the dungeons below the Boucoleon. Having secured the Imperial Family and the fortresses of the city, this Alexius Ducas had himself declared Emperor, and so he became Alexius V. Many citizens called him Murzulphus because of his very bushy eyebrows. The old blind Emperor and his son Alexius IV were then strangled lest they remain and become a threat as they had before. Murzulphus then began to order the city, treating the people very harshly, and began to make war on the Franks. Fire ships were once again sent against the Venetian ships. Some were burnt but a change in the wind allowed many of them to escape.

Letter from Subject Alais to Subject Esclamonde.
Dearest Grand-Sire and Prince Esclamonde,
I bring grave tidings, my dearest brood sister Blaise has been terribly injured. She has recently discovered her spiritual side which appears to have brought her a great deal of inner peace, although it has come at a cost, she is no longer the Blaise that loved to spend time at parties and dress in the latest styles. She dresses simply with no adornment, and no longer attends the parties of Constantinople. Whilst at first this concerned me, after speaking at length with her she appears to be much happier than she was, and she accepts that I do not aspire to lead the same style of life.
Alas I digress; I must explain to you the nature of her injuries. Whilst at the docks waiting for a ship to arrive with what appears to me to be a spiritual leader on board she was set upon by members of house Tremere, the leader of the house, Abertorius, and his assistant, Fletcher, a man I have known for around 10 years who worked alongside me in the medical field. I thought I had begun to know him quite well, although not well enough to call him ally, even though he was a member of the new usurper clan. I had almost begun to think that they were not all as bad as the rumours would have us believe.
Although I was not present at the time from what it Blaise has told me this so called acquaintance of mine was instructed to conjure fire to destroy the ship and those waiting for it on the dockside. Blaise was hit in the chest by one of these sorcerous fireballs and knocked into the sea. I suppose that her fall was most fortuitous as if she had not the flames would have consumed her entirely. Once she was under the water she was assaulted with more magicks, the water around her was somehow hardened so she was unable to move. Quite possible with the intention to leave her there, trapped underwater and unable to defend herself, for the rising of the sun. After this the battle continued and eventually the ship was destroyed and it's cargo taken by the Tremere. One of my other companions, a man named Xavier who had witnessed the entire attack but could do little to prevent it, dove into the docks and dragged Blaise, still trapped in this solidified water, to safety. If it was not for his actions she would either be dead or in the hands of the sorcerous Tremere, and if she had been taken I shuddered to think at what would have befallen her.
Blaise has informed the scion families of what has occurred, and they plan some form of retaliation, although what yet has not been decided. I will of course keep you informed of all events and try to encourage Blaise to write to you herself. I have suggested that my compatriots and I travel to Carcassone soon. If the Tremere is still with us then he will be traveling with us. Once we arrive you can do as you see most fitting.

The situation becomes increasingly untenable here. The plan has unfortunately backfired. Some humiliation was suffered and a blood bond was forced upon both myself and Fletcher. I shall take matters to negate much of this. Some doors have closed, but others are most certainly now opening. So long as the Franks remain at bay, I believe the situation can still be recovered.

It is with a sad heart that I write to you, rather than visit on this anniversary of Elsh’s demise. Unfortunately I currently reside within the city of Constantinople and with all the political tension between the Latins and the Greeks, I very much doubt I will be able to return and see you any time soon. It is my hope that I will be able to do so next year, and celebrate this prestigious event in your court.
I would inform you of the progress of my coterie, but I very much doubt you care enough about the situation to warrant a lengthy declaration of all the events that have occurred since our arrival. There is surely a great deal for you to be arranging with the imminent arrival of the Crusaders via Constantinople without concerning yourself with the affairs of neonates in other cities.
Forgive my harsh words, but I speak the truth in my heart. There are words that I dare not speak aloud, yet must be stated in order for me to feel in any way honest with you. Despite your lack of faith in what we could have been, I will always wait for you to fulfil the promise you made, in vain or otherwise. You will never be fully aware of truly how much you owe me.

Oh, how I am so very weary.
I must wonder what I have become. I was a man, and then I was a monster. And then, barely two decades past, and my life was gone - they were all dead. But what am I now?
I am the man who must court an insane sorceress by taking a pretence of being her long-dead lover.
I am a Cappadocian necromancer - cold, calm, pragmatic.
I am the self-interested monster, who at the first silent plea from an unknown vampire, ran into fire. Before I could follow events, I was pushing a block of stone along the floor of the bay. And what now?
Fletcher just called – curse the night I gave him that ritual skull. Almost, I had come to trust him - and now he proves himself no better than that Tremere succubus, Mara. Or then again, perhaps not? I know what it is to be given impossible orders; always, we at the base of the social ladder must dance at the whims of those whose age define them as Elders, and who laughably call themselves our betters. Fletcher could easily have betrayed both mine and Blaise's presence to his Elder. But can I know that he did not? He sounded sincere, but he could simply be biding his time, along with that Albertorious. Even if such is not the case, Albertorious will consider me as part of his Salubri conspiracy, now. And I doubt the Tremere are any more forgiving than the Cappadocians.
For three nights I have sat, barely able to move. Gilliam grows worried about me, I think. Was my choice the right one? The Tremere are wrong – the Baali always deal with demons, not the Salubri. One silent call for help... I am not in the habit of diving into flaming wrecks, and yet I did. And I paused to save a Toreador – one of the arrogant Scion Family. Why? Has Alexia so unhinged me?
And Alexia. What to do with her? She entreats me to woo her, but I do so only at Constansia's behest. To protect her from Marcus – but by all appearances, he is the one who needs protecting.
My course is set. Though I doubt my limited talents will make any impact, I must attempt to cure Alexia of this malady of the mind – to free her from her chains. As to the Salubri and the Tremere, there is nothing I can do; perhaps Fredrickson is telling the truth (though I doubt it), perhaps not. Either Albertorious knows of my involvement, and plots my death, or he does not. Either way, it is currently beyond my power to know or to act.

I know your master, and how well you have been taught in the creation of lies, desires and half-truths. I know your nature well, and I will not become your whore or your assassin. I know that just like him, you will poison my mind and my body, leading my heart astray from its true purpose. Rumble in the Bucoleon - Constantinople Winter 1203/04

The winter began mildly, the snowfall was light and many took this as an omen. Throughout the city of Constantinople there were reports of Angels of the Lord appearing. Many people gathered in the places where these beings had appeared and prayed, seek intervention on their behalf. The city authorities became most concerned by these sightings and the Patriarch sought to understand their meaning. As such those who had witnessed these miraculous events were brought before the Patriarch and Abbots of the city and questioned as to what they had observed. Many rumours were spread about, some saying that the Angel was that of the Archangel Michael, and that he had come to smite the city for its wickedness, others that he had come to destroy the accursed Franks.
As winter grew on the people who had lost their homes and possessions in the great fire were forced to build huts and hovels in the remains of their old houses, or take up residence in the Hippodrome. Many began to die from a lack of food, disease and the cold. At this time the Marquis of Montferrat returned to the city, leaving the Count of Flanders with the young Emperor. Messengers from the Holy Land arrived, including Simon, Count of Montfort. They sought to convince the Franks to come to Jerusalem’s aid while the weather and tides permitted them. A few nobles left with them, most stayed, for the Doge of Venice would not permit any Venetian ship to leave or carry them southwards. All were to remain on the Golden Horn.
It is said that at this time Alexius III, the former emperor of Constantinople, who had been raiding the countryside and clashing with the Franks, was found, drowned in his bath.

Things begin to move with a new and vigorous pace here. Matters are now working at a speed that will soon place them beyond the hands of any mortal. If he could but attend Elysium on a regular basis, or interact with other, not of his clan, then I am sure his condition would be much improved. I am aware of the various objectives our clan currently has in that city. I therefore require clarification on what exactly is to be done. Currently favour is being shown to the native Ventrue.
Urgency is requested in this clarification. I also humbly request a reinforcement of gargoyles be sent.

I beseech you one last time for an intervention, if she is observed again then I can not ensure her safety, or that some zealous neonate or ancillae might not seek redress for a perceived insult. In addition her appearance as I am sure you have noticed had taken a most perculiar turn. Perhaps she has spent too much time in the company of the Obertus?

As the close of the year approached and the city became increasingly covered with snow, many unfortunates, left homeless were forced to endure the cold as no shelter could be found for them. The accursed Franks continued to plague the city, attacking villages and town in the region, looting and burning with wild abandon. Yet the Emperor Alexius IV did nothing, he continued his feasts and drinking, despite the pleas of his people and the church.
The Doge of Venice along with many other great magnates from the Kingdom of France to the Hagia Sophia and after worshipping there consulted with the Emperor and all the great men of Constantinople. There they demanded the payments and promises that had been made to them be fulfilled. The Emperor Alexius scorned them, declaring that he no longer required their services. Turning in rage to the young man, the elderly Doge declared that it had been by his hands that he had been brought up from the filth, and it would by be these hands that he would be put back. From this moment on Greeks and Franks were at war. In the month of December there were two attempts by the Generals Alexius Doukas and Theodore Lasciartes to burn the Venetian ships at anchor in the Golden Horn. Fire ships were dispatched loaded with combustible material. The winds were not in the favour of the Greeks though and the Venetians managed to escape both times from the danger, with only losing some 25 ships.

Sire, it would appear that there is nothing more to be done here. I have settled all accounts as best I can. All lose ends have been tied up. Assamites are active in the region and exacerbate matters in the way they only know how. I have gained passage away from the city before the fire consumes us all; Gabriella of Genoa was most helpful in this matter. I shall write again as soon as I have made landfall.

The ruse I fear has failed, the bat did not lure the intended target out. Though Theresa and various cronies did make themselves know. I am afraid that she escaped. But not before some of their circle could be cut down. Research indicates a definite connection to the Obertsu Tzimice. Fletcher has proved himself useful enough, but I am sure there may be consequences for our House here in Constantinople. I shall send the cargo back as soon as the winds and ships permit.

As the close of the year approached and the city became increasingly covered with snow, many unfortunates, left homeless were forced to endure the cold as no shelter could be found for them. The accursed Franks continued to plague the city, attacking villages and town in the region, looting and burning with wild abandon. Yet the Emperor Alexius IV did nothing, he continued his feasts and drinking, despite the pleas of his people and the church.
The Doge of Venice along with many other great magnates from the Kingdom of France to the Hagia Sophia and after worshipping there consulted with the Emperor and all the great men of Constantinople. There they demanded the payments and promises that had been made to them be fulfilled. The Emperor Alexius scorned them, declaring that he no longer required their services. Turning in rage to the young man, the elderly Doge declared that it had been by his hands that he had been brought up from the filth, and it would by be these hands that he would be put back. From this moment on Greeks and Franks were at war. In the month of December there were two attempts by the Generals Alexius Doukas and Theodore Lasciartes to burn the Venetian ships at anchor in the Golden Horn. Fire ships were dispatched loaded with combustible material. The winds were not in the favour of the Greeks though and the Venetians managed to escape both times from the danger, with only losing some 25 ships.

Fletcher has proved himself useful enough, but I am sure there may be consequences for our House here in Constantinople. I shall send the cargo back as soon as the winds and ships permit.

The Queen of Cities - Constantinople Summer 1203
Extract from MS Skopje 776.8, also known as The Lost Chronicle of Morea, from here on known as MS Skopje.
The Franks having won the throne for the boy Emperor Alexius did not immediately leave the city and go on to Syria and Egypt as had been their intention. There were great arguments in the army, some wished to leave immediately and join with the others who had not come to Constantinople, but had gone to Syria, so that they might help the Christians there recover Jerusalem. Others said that they should wait for the Emperor to make good his promises to them, for he had promised both 10,000 men as well as a great sum of money to the crusade if they would but wait for him. The Marquis Boniface was quite eager to move on with all speed, while Doge Enrico Dandalo argued for them to stay, since Venice had yet to be repaid. The Count of Flanders remained indecisive and was often away from the city at Scutari.
The former emperor, deposed by the boy had fled the city upon the arrival of the Franks and taken up residence at Adrianipole. There he gathered about him his loyal supporters and those who hated the Franks greatly. He employed many Cuman and Pecheneg auxiliaries and plotted to retake the city, hopefully once the Franks had left for Syria.
There were many Franks in the city at this time, their fleet remaining off shore and their encampment being about Galata. They traveled through the city, worshipping at the many shrines and churches, awed by the riches that were common in our lands but alien to their own.

My dearest friend, I hope you will do me the gracious favour of attending a feast, to be held in the Baths of Caracalla, tonight. It is but a simple affair, and I do hope to see you there. All manner of refreshments and entertainments will be served, though if you do wish to provide your own delicacies then all you need do is make mention of it to the servants upon arrival and all will be taken care of. As is the nature of our kind, the rules of Elysium will be in effect at the venue.
The bearer of this letter is to be admitted to the baths only upon this evening, the XXVII of July in the year MCCIII. All courtesies and amenities are to be offered to the bearer of this letter for he is a personal guest of mine. All of their needs are to be met in whatever swiftest manner possible.

Most Noble Prince,
I do not wish to bother you at this most busiest of time, but I seek another audience with you. I am afraid that my Sire Luis Moncada must have a reply to the matters upon which he wrote to you most recently. Also the matter concerning the departure of the Crusade of Syria needs to be discussed most urgently. I fear that if it is left hear too long that it shall fall apart and the Holy Land will be even further imperiled. Action is required immediately.

Lacking any suitable gold to pay to the Crusaders and thus relieve himself of the burdensome debt owed the Emperor Alexius IV decreed that the gold and silver of the noble families of the city, and the precious items belonging to the Church should be sold or melted down. By this method he hoped that the Franks would be satisfied and so remove themselves from these shores. The nobles and bishops of the empire were most displeased by the news. Gravely insulted were they by the Emperor Alexius. In some places they resisted and refused to hand over their gold and silver. Thus it was necessary to use armed men to retrieve the money. Many great men who had initially welcomed back the young Emperor now turned their affections to the usurper Alexius III, and did visit him at his camp near Adrianipole.

Dearest brother I am most perturbed by the continuing miracles and sightings that are being reported about our fair city. Though I do not doubt that some of these ma be signs from the Lord, I am concerned about how such messages are take. For those poorly educated in such matters will be want to attach greater meaning or significance, or great error to them. It has come to my attention that there are rumours currently circulating Galata concerning the miraculous healing powers of angels, bestowed upon some Frankish knight. I have heard it said that the chief Serpent himself has been seen across the Golden Horn. This may be the work of Alfonzo and nothing more, yet it is merely another symptom of the many problems we currently face. I would discuss these matters further with you.

The citizens of Constantinople, driven and aroused by the endless torment and haughtiness of the insufferable Franks rose in anger against the army of foreigners lying beyond their city. Stirred to violence by the consistent taxation placed upon them by the Emperor Alexius IV, offended by his uncouth and barbarian ways the people of the Queen of cities could stay quiet no longer. Seizing ships the traveled across the Golden Horn and attacked all Franks they found it the region of Galata, burning houses and stealing goods as they went. Then turning back across the Horn they searched the city for any Frankish resident and did murder and torture them most grievously. For days bodies were left hanging from columns and posts about the city as a warning. The Ducas family was called before the Emperor Alexius to explain these matters for reports had come to him that they had encouraged and lead these mobs in the elimination of foreigners.
Spurred on by rage at the crime committed against the Franks crossed the Horn on the 20th of August and did attack the Mosque of the city, killing all Muslims they found there and setting it alight. The people of the city took arms and came to the defence of those pagans who had long been resident in their city, and in the chaos the fire spread further a field, burning all night and all day. Much of the city was damaged, scores were killed or injured. The Hagia Sophia and palace was damaged, as was the Great Bazaar. As the fire died so did the passions of the combatants.

Most noble Caesar, reports have com to me via my brethren in the Obertus Monastery that the so called Children of Calomena are once again active in our fair city. Maintaining the interests of our esteemed and beloved father Patriarch Michael I am sure that you will use all means necessary to remove this blight from upon his city. Various members of our kind, including some kindred from the west were attacked not far from the great bazaar this past night. No doubt the fiends were availing themselves of the opportunities created by the great conflagration.
I would also request an audience with you in these coming nights, there is much that concerns both me and my loyal brethren.

My dearest grand-childer, I hope this missive finds you well, and though I know your studies are of great importance to you I fear that these matters must draw you away. It has come to my attention that various tomes. Located in our Obertus Library have gone missing. Not all of them can be accounted for reasoned with losses due to misplacement, cataloging errors or the vicissitudes of time. I fear that there is a thief amongst our order who is removing them. All the missing volumes seem to be rather specific and detailed in their subject, not to mention being relatively rare works themselves. I commend you to investigate this matter internally and see what may come of it. I have already set the neonate Gaius onto the matter, hopefully his inquisitions will prove fruitful.

Investigations continue, various warded locations have now been identified. Much appears to be old, perhaps former sites of hers, but certainly many I am sure are naught but chaff, the ramblings of inane hedge wizards and long dead sooth-sayers. Three sites remain, I must pin my hopes to these. Guiseppe is sure there is something hiding there, that she maintains something of worth, If I can but find it. Augustus will be most pleased. Wraiths report other activity by their kind, her guardians, I must proceed with caution.

I apologise for the lack of communication but it seemks my last missive to you was lost, perhaps way laid by an agent of our kind. I assure you this will not happen again.
I have done all that I can here, but the situation can not be resolved. There is great dissention amongsth the forces of the Crusade, many wish to leave Constantinople and head for Syria and deliver into Christian hands the city of Jerusalem once more. However, many of the leaders, the Marquis of Montferrat, the Count of Flanders and that meddlesome Doge Dandalo will not remove from the city until they have been sufficiently recompensed by the Emperor Alexius IV. I have spread enough information about and certainly those who are capable of leaving have done so.
However many remain, loyal to their lords as they are. It is no secret there that Marcus Musa Giovanni and Alfonzo are working, though not necessarily together for greater Venetian interests. Narses hand is clearly at work. I have received reports of meeting between Alfonzo and the retainers of the Marquis of Montferrat. I shall endeavour to discover more.
The Antonian Ventrue arefractured and Anna Comnena is most outspoken of them, I am not sure if Caius will retain control without the intervention of Michael. The Tzimice are falling away without a doubt. The Assamites are now active in the city and they too wish to keep it here, as they did in Venice last year, and so keep the shores of their lands free.

In the autumn while the remains of summer could still be felt in these lands, before the sun would set and eternal night fall upon the queen of the golden horn, the Emperor Alexius IV with the accompaniment of the Count of Flanders and the Marquis of Montferrat and over 2000 of their men left Constantinople. He proceeded about the various territories of his realm, gathering taxes and supplies so as to pay the accursed Franks. Much was he derided by the nobles and prelates of the land. First they must lose their lands and wealth to the pillaging of the former emperor Alexius III and now only lose what remained to the current Emperor Alexius IV. It was at this time that the Ducas family in Constantinople began to gather increasing support about them.

Concerning the matters of the lost books from our library. My investigations have turned up various individuals who could possibly be responsible or at whose feet blame may be justly be laid. I assure you that they have been dealt with, perhaps you saw some at the recent festivities.
However despite my rigorous questioning of these individuals, actual names and culprits have yet to be identified. I can confirm that it is most certainly a kindred of the city, and perhaps one of our own and that they are not working alone.
There is some good new however. Gaius has turned up various leads, he has located an part of the sewer network where he suspects some of these works have been stored for sometime, only then to be moved on elsewhere. I shall seek an audience with Malachite and see what he may be able to inform me of.

Most noble and fair Petronious, various things have come to my attention and I wish to make them known to you so that you as a scion of your clan and family in this city might take appropriate action.
Firstly it concerns the muse Gregorious, he despite orders otherwise continues to wander the streets searching out those who have reported visions of the Archangel Michael. Those who attempt to stop him or defy him are dealt with by him in a most brutal manner. I do not think that such things will continue to go unnoticed, despite my best efforts. Unsound of mind he has been for a long while now, but I suggest something be done about him. His bouts of violence are beginning to show through his usual melancholy.
Secondly, Blaise, a member of your family has been seen wandering our sewers these past few weeks. Nothing has yet been done for he has not approached any prohibited areas or broken any of our laws, say perhaps ignorantly stumbling into our territory unannounced. Yet her demeanor and appearance, usually so high and opulent for one fitting her rank and family, appears now quite different. Observations of her have revealed various instances where she has lost control of herself, an action that were it in a more populated area, would undoubtedly be a great cause for alarm. I of course do not have to inform you that there are many more things that inhabit or make use of these sewers than just the members of my clan.

The year came to a close and the celebration of Christmas took place in the Holy City of Jerusalem. The roads south to Bethlehem were choked with pilgrims who had remained in the realm since September. The Templars acted as their guards and guides, offering all assistance against the vile Bedouin who infested the lands. A great celebration in the Palace of Jerusalem with the little king Baldwin, Count Raymond of Tripoli, Count Joscelin of Edessa, Count Reginald of Sidon, Count Baldwin of Ramla, Count Balian of Ibelin, Count Bonifac of Montferrat, Guy de Lusignan, Patriarch Heraclaius and many other members of the Church.
It also happened at thistime that the old Bishop of Nazareth, resident in Nablus caught a fever whilst out riding one day, he took to bed and did not recover. The canons of the Church of Nazareth were much overjoyed by the death of the man they viewed as a usurper to the See. A new candidate was elected and peace restored to the diocese.

I have learnt from various sources that she has been researching the elders of the Jewish faith, their history; something is brewing between her and Abraham. It should not threaten the advances I have made here though.

Please find below a complete list of properties and lands now belonging to our family and the city of Venice.
I. Twelve houses and a place in the market are to be given to the Giovanni family, merchants of Venice, within the city of Jerusalem
II. Exemption from all tolls and taxes upon the gates of the city for moveable goods entering the city.
III. There they shall inherit property as per the statues of the law.
IV. The houses shall be subject to royal tax as they lie within the royal demesne
V. The market stalls and the goods of the Giovanni sold there shall be exempt from all taxes and fees
VI. At Tel Dair Alla they shall have be granted a further 8 houses, for which they shall pay all owed taxes and rents.
VII. At Tel Dair Alla they are granted the right to build a mill for the production of sugar. The export of this shall be exempt from taxes and customs
VIII. At Tel Dair Alla they may also build an oven and use it in the manner they see fit, receiving payment for its use by villains.
IX. The Casal of Beit Jurbran is also granted to the Giovanni family along with all the lands and people subject to it. There they shall have a church and a fortified tower.
X. In return for the above the representatives of the Giovanni family shall provide for three knight, nine horses and four sergeants to serve when called by the king.
XI The Giovanni also recognize the rights and position of Lucius, Prince of Jerusalem as legitimate lord of the kingdom, set above all others, and will endeavor to assist in the upholding of the peace and customs of the kingdom and its lord.
XII. In the City of Acre, six houses and a place on the market next to the harbour shall also be granted.
XIII. All taxes and tolls on silk, grain, iron, wood and sugar entering or leaving the city shall be waived for the Giovanni.
I hope you find the above most pleasing to you my Lord. I’m afraid I could not prevent some gains being made by the Malatesta or their masters the Tremere, but I have checked their influence at various points. Further work will have to be done to ensure future profits and dominance. I understand the Pactum Warmundi in Tyre is under threat currently; I shall go there and ensure that the city of Venice’s rights remain intact.

In the second month of they year MCLXXXVI since the incarnation of our lord Jesus Christ, while deep snow lay upon the ground, many a knight did wander the roads of the Kingdom and murder stained the snow red with blood. Near Bethgibelin witches were seen and the fires of Hell opened up and consumed the sinners of the land. The city of Caesarea on the coast, a haunt and den of all vices was rocked by earthquakes and many a tower fell. Walter, lord of the city did come before the Bishop and do penance for the ills that he had brought upon the land. Illegal war had been made by him upon his neighbours the Ibelins, some were killed, but soon the matter was at an end and Walter came before the Baillie Raymond and the Haute Cour to as forgiveness for his actions.

Try to recover Lord Walter if you are able, if he I too far gone, then I trust in your judgment. I shall return to Jerusalem via Bethlehem. God speed to you.

I hope you find the above most pleasing to you my Lord. I’m afraid I could not prevent some gains being made by the Malatesta or their masters the Tremere, but I have checked their influence at various points. Further work will have to be done to ensure future profits and dominance. I understand the Pactum Warmundi in Tyre is under threat currently; I shall go there and ensure that the city of Venice’s rights remain intact.

Protect the Ibelins, Elsh has designs on destroying them. He has contacts in Joscelin’s camp. Do whatever you must to secure them and their estates, but do not strike any fatal blows against the Count of Edessa.

I do hearby declare that the Kindred known as Elsh, who is illegally occupuying the city of Caesarea, is blood hunted. I call all loyal members of the Courts of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jaffa, Acre and Tyre to assemble with all the forces they are capable of mustering, five nights hence at the town of Bethgibelin. Walter, lord of the city did come before the Bishop and do penance for the ills that he had brought upon the land. Illegal war had been made by him upon his neighbours the Ibelins, some were killed, but soon the matter was at an end and Walter came before the Baillie Raymond and the Haute Cour to as forgiveness for his actions.

The traitor Elsh has been destroyed and met his final death. No doubt he resides now in Hell. When you have recovered sufficiently I require you to ride to Caesarea and secure the city. Conrad and Ekiarties have met their final death at the hand of the traitor and his minions. Jared has recovered, take him and his Hospitallers and do what must be done. Try to recover Lord Walter if you are able, if he I too far gone, then I trust in your judgment. I shall return to Jerusalem via Bethlehem. God speed to you.
