City on the Elbe - Magdeburg 1211

Letter between Subject Celsus Obertus and Subject Gaius Menas Pelagius.

1211
Dear Gaius,
I trust that your travels in Europe are keeping you well, your continued correspondence has been a most entertaining read and has given us many interesting insights into the politics of the various Courts of Europe, there are those among our number who believe that some of these cities would make good locations for the establishment of some new safe houses and abbeys though perhaps by members of our number who will blend in better with European society. You will be glad to know that we are still going strong, despite the occasional attack by the more violent Viovodes, I have recently heard from Nilus that he his having some success in rebuilding one of our monasteries in the stabler parts of Byzantium.
This is not the reason I write to you however, your next destination has been decided. It has been decreed that you should travel to Magdeburg as soon as you are able, there are events unfolding within Lord Jurgens court that are of interest to us, hopefully this may also provide an opportunity for you to establish a new abbey and also perhaps give us a presence within the courts of the Black Cross. However, I should warn you that there may be a great deal of Usurper presence within the city, as their found breed is also moving to take advantage of the current political situation, you should also be careful that there will be members of our clan within the courts there, I cannot promise that there will be any familiar faces however as most likely these will be out Carpathian cousins who are often less than friendly towards our bloodline.
Be careful, move with caution.
Your Sire,
Celsus Obertus

As you can tell from previous entries, I have been travelling Europe in the company of Osias of Clan Brujah and Kalidah of The Followers of Set. I suppose what many would be asking is that why would two god fearing members of the damned flock of god be travelling with one of the heathen followers of the church of set, who act to corrupt all of those they encounter through their trading of favours and vice? The answer to this is both simple and rather complex, I have known Kalidah for nearly eight years; a piffling amount of time to one of the undying such as me I admit, however in these years while Kalidah has attempted (and occasionally succeeded) into luring me into indulging my desires and vices she has repeatedly fought side by side with me, and despite numerous opportunities has yet to betray me or the rest of our companions despite numerous opportunities to do so. As such, while I cannot say I agree with her choice in religious practices, I have come to count her as a comrade. Further I feel that I owe her a great debt for her support in the events that transpired two years ago, for that alone I will defend her as she did me.
As for Osias, I believe that he travels with her out of interest, he is a scholar first and foremost and the opportunity to experience more of Europe and learn information about the religion and culture of the Followers of Set is far too tantalising a possibility to ignore. My retainers and followers have accompanied the travelling merchant families of Kalidah for some time now, passing from court to court and staying for a relatively limited time, often long enough for us to evaluate the social situation and the political topography as well as searching for some of Kalidah's clan mates. I have often taken the opportunity to garner boons and favours in the territories I pass through by exchanging knowledge or teaching a few of my talents (though not my rarest) and by plying the gift of moulding the human clay given to us by the lord. In exchange for these favours, I have usually requested financing, future favours as helping my clan establish a presence and occasionally one or two books or tomes that have caught my interest. I have been working hard to maintain contact with my Obertus brethren, such as some of my colleagues who are currently engaged in a similar activity to me by spreading the presence of the Obertus and gaining a foothold in one land or another, or those who remain in the Balkans and our remaining monasteries however I admit that contact through the usual mediums is difficult due to the fact that I am frequently travelling.
My sire is the individual I am most frequently in contact with, it his from him that I have received my latest orders from the Obertus. I am to travel to Magdeburg in the Court of the Black Cross, apparently there is something unfolding there that is of some importance to the elders, though I can't say I look forward to the presence of more usurpers and I worry that my Carpathian cousins will be less than happy to see me. Say one thing of the Usurpers, for all their politicking their clain isn't nearly as fractious as ours. I wonder whom among our previous travelling companions will be present in Magdeburg? I have been keeping in contact with Xavier Hugo of Clan Cappadocian, who is apparently working harder to study theology and the religious aspect of academia, perhaps there is hope for him yet, this has however led to some rather lively debates between the two of us.
I wonder what Magdeburg will be like, I have yet to learn to speak German, however I hope to quickly add the language to my repertoire. I'm sure that Kalidah or one of the other linguists among our small circle will be willing to teach me in exchange for a small favour. As for what will occur within the city on the Elbe, only God knows.

……I tire of this continual travelling, of this lack of faith in myself and in my divine mission. The world is intended to test me and try to unsettle my beliefs; it seems to build me up only to knock me back down again. This is not what I thought it would be like at all.
I thought I knew my heart and what I wanted, and yet since my return to Jerusalem only to be denied I feel lost and abandoned by the one I loved. We are so different that he is almost my antithesis – and yet I feel that I cannot give up on him, that he truly is the person with whom I am meant to be with. I had thought the blood hunt was in jest, but now I know much differently. I am certain I can get around it, if I can be given but a few moments with him.
Even as he denies the aid I gave him against his enemies and sends his followers to tear me apart, even as I feel the anger rise within me and unfurl about him, I will not give up on him. He is a gift, and like all offerings of the Dark God, he is a double edged sword to be used with caution. He is a double edged sword that seems to strengthen and weaken me in equal measure, able to turn on me at any time. I gave up so much to be with him, I am now a pariah of my own clan because of my inability to give up on a lost cause. I have never felt this way of anyone before, so I know it must be true. There is more to it than the blood: whatever he believes.
Even as I scribe my heart with his name, I cannot help but feel I must apologise to Talbot, but I know he will not have me; I also fear I only wish his company to fill the hole that Lucius has torn through me. I might go to him under the guise of needing his advice, only to end up in the same position as I was in before, only this time, he may well wish to do me harm. I should be concerned for my safety, and yet I am not so worried about the damage he could to me – I am ready to pass over with a clear conscience.
But not before I have made up with Lucius. He is in my blood, as I am in his…..

Most Esteemed of Set

I thank you kindly for the loan of the books you sent with your last letter, and respectfully return previously leant tomes along with a few additions I have picked up across my travels. In particular, I draw your attention to the writings, copied in haste, from the collection of Gaius: though I know the clan has no interest in the mistruths of other faiths, there is a certain amount of interesting points that might be worthy of further investigation. I have many questions to discuss with you upon my return, but rather than burden this letter with my ignorance, I shall wait till I see you next, and see if I cannot figure some of them out on my own.
I am somewhat suspicious of the willingness of my companions to accompany me across the face of Christendom: as charming as I, I am not exactly cut from the same cloth as they themselves. They seem to have convinced by my ‘conversion’, and it will be a charade I continue throughout my travels. I am also intrigued by the notion of using it as a way of converting them to the true way of the Dark God – Gaius has weaknesses enough and indulges in them frequently enough, but Osius is still a mystery to me. Brujah are always a little…hard to crack though.
When we last spoke you were good enough to mention my previous failures: at the time, I had no words to say to you regarding the matter. Now, having meditated upon it awhile, and for the love I hold for you as my sire, I must respectfully point out that everyone has their failings, and how else can I learn without making a few mistakes? Have I not always taken care of the problems afterwards? I am certain that not even Great Set Himself was perfect, but that constantly striving for self- improvement and understanding was the way he taught us to survive.
As ever, send my well wishes to my brood-siblings, and I hope for your continued life and love.

Extract from the Journal of Subject Xavier Hugo.

Thus did the "excitement" in Carcassonne came to an end. Khleda left soon after, and with her Gaius and Osaiis. I remained behind, studying under the careful if idiosyncratic tutelage of Irenie. She taught me much - not merely about Mortis, but about the wider purposes of our clan. Irenie held great favour for the virtues of reasoning and rational thought; these virtues, first and foremost, she imparted to me. We spent endless evenings walking through the cool night of the graveyard, as she gave me puzzle after unsolvable puzzle. And, largely, she seemed... satisfied... with my progress.

Dolphus, likewise, continued to tutor me, through the medium of ritual magic. Our conversations wandered over various and varied topics; we swapped news of our respected homes, and I introduced him to Irenie; we talked about our studies, and advances we had made in both the study of death, and the perfection of the arts of sorcery (his advances in both fields were significantly more impressive); and he continued to tutor me in the philosophies of the clan.

My studies were lacking, however - both my teachers agreed on this. While my pursuit of sorcerous knowledge was considered positively prodigal, my stubborn refusal to consider the fields of theology and politics resulted in, my tutors felt, a gaping holes in my education. The first was simply solved: Irenie appear at my haven one evening, arms laden with books of a religious nature, gathered from across the known world. Her instructions were simple: I was to read, and learn.

The second was less easily solved. No text I have read before or since has ever fully captured the infinite and subtle complexities of Cainite politics. This was something, Irenie and Dolphus agreed, that I would have to see for myself.

Thus it was that I was sent off to school - in the form of Magdeburg. I was to observe a great meeting, between the Clan Ventrue and others. It was there that I again met Khleda, and Gaius, and Osaiis...

Proclamation by Subject Jurgen, found in Vienna Archive 2.

Cainite Prelates of Christendom, I Jurgen , Lord of Magdeburg, Childer of Lord Hardestadt, paragon of Clan Ventrue., do invite all those who know and respect the might and power of our clan to attend the great festivities that will be held at our Elysium in the city of Magdeburg. All who acknowledge the superiority and position of our preeminent clan will be welcomed most warmly as dear friends, and will be gifted as deserves that friendship. For now in these dark times the true light of civillisation and rule of law shall be brought to the heathen lands of the east, where the savage and barbarian have ruled the night too long. None may stand in the way of divinely appointed order, for the earth must match the heavens, and all of mankind must be brought under the rule of the one true faith. Have it known that those who stand against us, stand against reason and peaceable society itself, they shall not be spared in their fates.

Letter 1 between Subject Albin and Subject Lucretia

My Lady,

While his grace Lord Jurgen may very well be enjoying the accolades and applause of his supporters and friends in his recently proclaimed venture, I can assure you that this is not the case for the burgesses of the city. Our numbers have grown too great for the city and not enough herd has been brought or provided for by the visiting Cainites. The people fear to walk the street and suspect our presence, though they are unable to fathom it. I urge you to speak to Lord Jurgen on this, lest inaction bring down doom upon us all.

Letter 1 between Subject Kara and Subject Rustovich

My Lord, Sovereign of the East.

I have as you commanded delivered your words to the warlord Jurgen in his court at Magdeburg. He and his simpering sycophants have not the wisdom or the sense to hear reason. It is to be war. Knights of the German Order will soon be dispatched into your territory. I shall attempt to serve your ends here as best I can until it is no longer possible for me to remain. I have heard rumours that the Gangrel Morrow and her pack are in the city and have attacked numerous convoys on the road between Magdeburg and Hildesheim.

Letter 1 between Subject Tancred of Benevento and an unknown recipient.

Dearest Friend,

I have conversed with the Patrician Lord Jurgen, and have gained his word concerning the boy Frederick. Otto may wear the crown currently but Jurgen will not interfere if a new contender should arise to claim it. His and indeed Hardestadt’s eyes are firmly locked on the East. Hungary is their prize. Preparations may now begin for the boy’s journey North, Genoa appears favourable. Mithras’s puppet will not last long, the Toreador of the Empire have already turned more in favour of their French cousins and our brethren in Rome have the ear of the Curia. Capetian dominance may soon be assured.

Tancred

March 26th 1211.

From the journal of Xavier Hugo, of Clan Cappadocian, Carcassone 1211; translated from original Chaldean...

Oh, don't things just keep getting better?

I had but one small piece of good fortune this night - not a word spoken between myself and Vykos. I awoke and left the inn early, tracking down a local crypt to partake of the draught of blood and ashes - I figured I would need it for another night at Elysium, and I was not disappointed. Khleda and Gaius continued to snipe at me about Vykos' insane obsession.

My one brief relief was an enjoyable little sojourn with Osaiis down the river. It seems that the Prince was expecting one of the German river boats to arrive bearing some important cargo, and it was not too long before we discovered exactly why it was delayed - for it had been driven into the bank, and all its crew killed. Out of the mist appeared Morrow herself, as well as several of her followers. What followed was a civil enough conversation; Morrow politely requested us to return to Jurgen and relay her assurances that the stolen cargo (a stash of valuable silver bars) would be used to arm an army to stop his expansion. We were also given a letter.

It wasn't until we got back, of course, that things became complicated. Firstly, I discovered an exsanguinated body by the side of the road - not a victim of a visitor hunting out of the allowed area, as first I thought, but actually a victim of Albin. That soon became the least of my concerns, however, as the Toerador's precious lost sword was found in the possession of the Ravnos. They have been arrested, but Alais is convinced they are innocent - and I must say, I am tempted to agree. It is far too neat, and even the Ravnos would not be so foolish as to steal a item of such obvious political importance.

Further, we have been approached by the Keeper of Elysium herself (who, being the one who engaged the service of the Ravnos as entertainers, has fallen out of Lord Jurgen's favour) to investigate the matter. Who could it be? The untrustworthy Tremere, who stand to gain by becoming Jurgen's 'trusted advisers'? The emissary from the Courts of Love, who seeks to use the fact she was falsely accused as political leverage? The Gangrel, engaging in a twofold attack, both obvious and subtle? Perhaps, of course, it is Albin - who the rumours state was Prince of Magdeburg, until he was deposed by Jurgen. But... no, Albin would not have framed the Ravnos, but would have spirited the sword away completely, leaving the alliance between Jurgen and the French Toreador to crumble.

So; it could be the Tremere, being content to prove their worth to Jurgen, then affix the blame to a notoriously untrustworthy low clan, thereby wrapping the matter up nicely (I shall have to see if I can discuss this with Fredrickson - he may have information). It could, again, be the Toreador, seeking to force Jurgen onto the defensive, having falsely accused her of betrayal. It could well be the Ravnos engaged in some unlikely double-bluff...

Ye gods, politics is complicated. What did Irenie hope I would learn here, other than that my dislike of the ways of court has been quite right all along?

It grows late - the sun rises soon. Tomorrow night - another court, more intrigue, more danger.

Letter 1 Between Subject Henrich von Achern and an unknown recipient.

Everything has gone according to plan. Lord Jurgen has put the Lasombra fools fear’s to rest with his promises of neutrality over the position of Emperor. He has promised that Hardestadt and the Ventrue of the Empire will take no action concerning the rivals Otto and Frederick. Otto and his army are ready and by now should be crossing the Alps in to Italy to meet the ill prepared boy head on. The Lasombra are as of yet unaware. To think that we would stand for one of their puppets as Emperor! They shall return to the Sea of Shadows with their dark tails between their legs!

Jurgens plans continue apace here in the east, it appears that war will soon be upon us, Kara Lupescu and her master Rustovich are arming I have no doubt. Lord Jurgen is displeased, a shipment of silver bullion has gone missing on the Elbe having left Freiheim. Word is that Morrow is responsible.

Until next time,

Heinrich

Extract 95-97

March 2011
The events that have transpired so far in Magdeburg have given me much to consider, as I saw in Constantinople and Carcassone the events that transpire around me are dizzying in scope and as I have been told by Akuji and Myca Vykos: Shadows within Shadows. There is little that a piece as small as I can do to truly do to influence the moves of individuals such as Rustovich and Lord Jurgen, this does not mean however that action is pointless. Kahlidah and myself have occupied ourselves by engaging in investigations of our own, and because of our actions in causing the arrest of the Ravnos Silas and others we have been given the task of who is truly behind the events that transpire here. I fear that we might not ever find out, Kalidah and Alliases visions have been less than helpful on the subject, myself, I lack the ability to glean such knowledge from people and objects. In fact I feel that evening that the sight that I have been blessed with by the lord our god was stunted and weakened, indeed, I poured much of my will into it but gained nothing in return. Most frustrating I can assure you.
The unwanted affections of Myca Vykos upon Xavier continue to amuse me greatly, I feel that Xavier has let his pride cloud his judgment and fill what he considers to be sterile and divorced thinking into the actions of a child having a tantrum. Which while highly amusing gains him nothing more than pain as Vykos continues to torment him, all the while alluding to some sort of mark that he has left upon Xavier, I'm beginning to suspect that he is perhaps being somewhat literal and less metaphysical. While I acknowledge that I am flawed and limited myself, Xavier’s actions will only serve to cause him greater pain in the future, he needs to learn to back down and capitulate more often, surely a couple of nights under his ministrations would not be so remiss and would gain him a powerful ally? Unlike myself he does not have to worry about the toll that licentious actions would take upon his soul, after all being a heretic he is damned in Gods eyes already and condemned to eternal suffering in hell. A fate that I fear I may join him in due to my own sins and weakness, Oh, how I wish that I could console myself with the promise of purgatory or even eternal salvation but as always visions of the pit and its fallen keeps return in my dreams taunting me with my past transgressions. I feel that I am even more forsaken now, having tasted the forbidden flower of the amaranth and drank of the soul of another kindred. I have never felt such a rush before, beyond what I previously considered to be the most delicious of all fleshly sins. It is a dark and tempting mistress, more tempting even then the supple curves and slavic features of Natalys, I can sometimes feel its sirens call in my blood, tempting me for another taste and another rush of stolen power.
On the subject of the most forbidden of kindred sins (and yet, like all sins, so often indulged) Fletcher managed to quite deftly enrage me with a comment based upon my previous transgressions and I managed to lose control of my beast again, as a mortal I would never have imagined something so powerful and willful could dwell within the heart of man. Before I knew it I had dug my claws into the leathery flesh of his face and dealt him a rather painful blow, a most satisfying attack I say so myself. I had to fight the urge to lap up the blood, for I forced myself to come to my senses and realise that this would be playing into the usurpers plans. As much as I may hate my uncouth and pathetic Carpathian cousins, who foolishly have shed the forms given to them by god and donned monstrous countenances, I hate the devious usurpers more. They have stolen power that is not theirs, they pretend to power and might among Cainite ranks without possibly understanding the history and great power of the ranks that they stand among, what fool willingly grants himself eternal damnation?! What fool shoulders the curse of Caine willingly, if not joyously, with stolen blood none the less!
Before I lose my cool and reason, I should shift onto another topic. I have began to consider that there are many things that I have not been taught about the practices and traditions of my clan that I should learn in the coming years, and spending time in the east viewing their horrific works has made me consider that the applications of the creators shaping arts of flesh and form are somewhat limited as practiced by the Obertus currently, as ghoulish as the Carpathian applications are they seem to reach an understanding that many who have practiced the ways of the Obertus seem to have not. I am not at all suggestion that shedding the human form and progressing to something more monstrous is the key to understanding our inner selves and reaching divine transcendence, as the most mighty of gods creations and crafted in the creators image we must acknowledge that the human form was given to us for a reason. As much as the curse was forged for a reason, and all things in creation have their purpose.
Instead I am coming to the realisation that transcendence cannot possibly rely on the understanding and advancement of ones spiritual self alone, those thought alone would be considered somewhat heretical by the Obertus, but I cannot help but consider that if we are truly able to transcend and become one with our lord we cannot possibly neglect our physical selves. I feel that the problem with the Obertus and my Carpathian cousins is that we have both been too focused on merely one aspect of existence, some have been too far focused on the spiritual side and the support of that spiritual aspect and others have been too focused on merely the physical.
Consider, is the world not made from both flesh and spirit? The Cathars made a good point that it is in the physical world that many sins existed, but consider not that there are as many sins of spirit as there are flesh, the world of spirit and flesh are both corrupted by human inequity and failings. I cannot possibly phantom the work of Yah Wei, considering that I could do so would be blasphemy and hubris of the worst kind, what mortal could possibly understand the works of the creator better than the divine and holy himself? Instead I believe that to attain the transformation that my clan has been long searching for one must study both the physical and the spiritual, to do so gaining as much understanding of Gods creation as possible, I intend to do so by studying other beings within his creation and by attempting to divine their purpose and how they fit within the divine order, as well as attempting to understand the spiritual make up of the heathens as even in the roughest and most displeasing of rocks jewels and veins of wisdom may be found if one searches hard enough. Honing my own physical form is another step I have now begun considering taking, after all, I have turned my flesh crafting talents upon others for favours before and I work my flesh frequently to return it to its original form. Why shouldn't I turn my works upon myself and seek to perfect myself, so long as I remain motivated by attempting to understand gods creation and imitate his great works, in particular the beauty of some of his angelic servants, rather than motivated by base human greeds I should remain true to the cause.
I must finish my ramblings, as dawn approaches and I must rest once again before another night of frivolity and political upheaval approaches. I find myself missing the company of my childer more and more, I shall have to right to her soon, I miss her insights despite her relative youth and her faith serves only to fill me with increased strength and resolve when my own falters.

Proclamation 2 by Subject Lord Jurgen

To all Cainites within the domain of the city of Magdeburg. Be it known that the one known as Jervais Bani Tremere, of the usurping Clan Tremere, is here by as of this date, under the sentence of Blood Hunt. This is fitting punishment for the crimes and deceptions that he and his associates have committed here in Magdeburg in an attempt to undermine and destroy the bonds of friendship long held between myself and the Court of Love.

Holy Men - Carcassonne Summer 1209

Extract from MS Bilbao

Putting the city of Beziers behind them the army of God proceeded to the city of Narbonne. This city was very old and had been a great centre during the reign of Roman Emperors. Here the Bishop of the city surrendered the city, placing himself and his people into the hands of the Papal Legate Arnald-Amalric. For this city unlike its neighbour at Beziers was populated by good Christians, who despised and would not tolerate the frivolities of the heretics. Those who had attempted to flee from Beziers had come to the walls of the city, only to be turned away. From there they went to Carcassonne. Having secured Narbonne by treaty, the army of God advanced to the city of Carcassonne where that arch-heresiarch the Viscount Raymond-Roger Trencavel held court. The city was placed under siege, great siege engines were constructed and did great damage to the walls and towers.

After a week of fighting news arrived of the approach of the King of Aragon. He had come to settle the disputes between the army of God and the heretic lords of the region. He hosted negotiation between Raymond-Roger and the Papal Legate. There was much arguing, but realizing the impossibility of his position the Viscount surrendered his lands and cities so as to spare all the people who had taken refuge inside. On the 15th of August the army of God entered Carcassonne. There in the Cathedral the mass was heard and the Papal Legate did announce the establishment of an inquisition to root out the heretics hiding amongst the populace.

Proclamation 1 by Subject Esclarmonde the Black.

Sire, all has gone according to your wishes thus far. I have made preparations for King Pedro to come down from the mountains. The Lords who control those regions had been sufficiently satisfied. The presence of the Tremere continues to worry me. However there is oddly enough an Obertus Tzimice residing in the city. Given the exchanges between them to date I am sure the Tremere will be more than distracted. I have contacted Irenie, all is ready, the pieces will soon be in hand. It would be wise now to contact our brethren in Poitou.

Letter 3 from Subject Esclarmonde the Black to Subject Alexander.

Lord,

I am at a loss as to what to do now. The army of God is before my walls and is actively slaying my citizens. The beasts that lurk within their horde will not spare this city, despite what mortal negotiations will come to. Since I have received no word or succour from you. I have no choice but to place myself beyond your service, according to the customs of our land.

Margaritte continues her infatuation. Foolish girl, matters however must continue. I shall have Fletcher acquire the key components for the ritual. Ceoris have provided little help concerning the appearance of the members of House Quaesitor and House Flambeau. They have declared war upon us here. Letter 6 between Subject Luctia of Aragon and Subject Luis Moncada.

Sire, matters move with apace here. The Tremere Regent, Justinian has disappeared and rumours suggest murder. It is true that the Usurpers are currently engaged in a conflict with mortal hedge wizards, and they lay in ambush outside Elysium. I know not how this matter will effect your plans. The offer has been made to Esclarmonde, and she was not alone in the reception of that offer. The other items have been acquired. The Cappadocian Irenie was quite compliant in that respect. I shall continue on course as you have commanded.

Letter 1 from Subject Henri D’Evreux to Subject Unknown.

My Lord,

The Army of God has entered the city. An inquisition has begun. All the pieces are now in place. Simon de Montfort has come forward as the best candidate. The presence of this Dominc Guzman may be troubling. He is possessed of a faith that I have never found before. He was capable of making many of the Toreador and Brujah flee Elysium by his mere presence. Esclarmonde reigns and he support base is strong. How long that continues to last is known only to the Divine.

Majesty, most serene queen and Domina of Carcassonne,

I urge you with all the greatest respects and the admiration that I humbly hold for you to resist the perfidious and serpentine words of the scoundrel Armand de Bayonne. The Order of Bitter Ashes are nothing more than thieves who would steal what rightfully belongs to us. This can not be allowed to pass. I for one shall stand before him and deny him as our lord and saviour Christ denied Satan.

Rolande de Chantilly,

Champion of Carcassonne

September 1st 1209.

Extract from MS Bilbao

Finding the arch heresiarch Raymond Roger unsuitable to continue his rule of the people and city of Carcassonne, the assembled lords and prelates gathered to choose a new viscount, who could help restore the word of God to the people of the county. There was some debate then chose the Earl of Leicester Simon de Montfort as the new Viscount. There was much rejoicing amongst the army of God. Lord de Montfort immediately took over the Viscounts palace and the citadel of the city garrisoning his men there.

The King of Aragon then took his leave and returned to his own land. The Cathars of the city were hunted down and brought before the holy office of the inquisition. Many confessed to their crimes and were convinced to rejoin the true faith having been made aware of their errors. Others continued to reject the teachings of Jesus Christ; those who fell into this latter group were arrested and held by the inquisition until they repented. Those who would not were handed over to Lord de Montfort to be punished as the law demands. Those magnates who had erred in the way of Christ or who had harboured and aided Cathars were also stripped of their titles and their lands were given to good Christian lords.

IV. At no time is she to reveal her true nature to the Kine during these punishments.
V. Gaius for his crime is to be blinded and quartered outside the city walls.
VI. He may not return to the city for one whole day, but is to survive in those wild place here abouts. If God permits that he should live then he may return within the city and take up residence once more.

Letter 2 from Subject Henri D’Evreux to Subject Unknown.

My Lord,

The office of the inquisition has begun rounding up Cathars and other undesirables from the city and its lands. Though some risk is present for our kind, I believe that many of the Cainites here are sufficiently suited to avoiding detection in their actions, or failing that capable of disarming the lackies of the Bishop. Some ruffians and neonates were caught in their web of investigations. I will of course take the appropriate actions concerning such matters. The King of Aragon has departed these lands, but his Lasombra overseers still remain. Matters continue, Esclarmonde is no longer secure in her seat of power.

Violence against the will of God was rampant throughout the land. Heretic Lords, unwilling to part with their territories fought against the Army of God and those magnates who were to replace them in their lordships. Many knights having now served their time began to return to homes, their oaths to God fulfilled. Many Cathars attempted to flee before the soldiers of Christ and the inquisitors, but were soon captured and brought before his divine justice. Autumn came to the land and so the season for campaigning came to a close. With no other way to strike back as the inquisition or the soldiers of the lord, the perfidious Cathars and their protectors used poison and other murderous techniques upon those doing the work of the Lord. As punishment for this treachery the arch Heresiarch, the former Viscount, fell ill and did not recover. Struck low by the hand of the Lord, he died and proceeded straight to eternal damnation.

Letter between Subject Gaius Mena Pelagius and Subject Celsus Obertus

Summer 1209

Most Esteemed Sire,
As was ordered I have succeeded in establishing a Abbey for us in Carcassonne, however in the several months since my previous report there has been a major shift in the political situation, though my knowledge of the politics of the Court of Love and Cainite politics in their infinite complexity is relatively limited I am informed that Esclamond the Black has been accused of hiring Assamite assassins to eliminate several of her enemies within Carcassone and abroad, it is believed by one of my companions that the documents in question had been cunningly forged by some means so that even under the enhanced talents available to our clan and the Toreador their falsehood would not be revealed. It is suspected by this same individual that this is part of a scheme to further the influence of the Court of Shadows, which would explain the presence of Lucita of Aragon, as well as part of some form of manoeuvrings by several of Esclamonds enemies.
Despite the further complication of the political situation, and the removal of several important kindred at the hands of the Assamites, the Abbey remains safe as we have chosen to remain politically neutral and it should from here on in continue to grow without my personal tending. However there is a potential threat represented by the Inquisition due to accusations of licentiousness, which I believe may have originated from individuals within the populace controlled by the Usurpers. I have undergone questioning and trials, and while I have been found innocent so far I will probably be watched in future. However I suggest that any of our brethren who travel here should be careful not to arouse suspicion, and to keep their actions discreet for the foreseeable future.
The situation of the Usurpers remains somewhat troubling, they are currently suffering somewhat after the destruction of their regent by my fang, reducing their numbers to his apprentice and an individual you will remember from Constantinople, The fabled Prince of Doormats. I believe after the current incident that the erstwhile prince will be leaving Carcassone for safer locals, Cyricus has observed that they are engaged in packing and preparing. Justinians apprentice remains under the care of Esclamonde, weakened though she is, and it is not safe for me to act against her, though I have made sure to step up the process of encouraging infestations within their chantry in a hope of destroying their access to blasphemous magic and hopefully drawing them to the attentions of the Inquisition, this time I have focused on mice and pigeons, I'm also hoping that I can encourage a flock or two of local corvids to use the building as their resting place, in particular I have been attempting to teach them to form blasphemous symbols, though the complicated designs are beyond their minds. As for further undermining the Usurpers within the city, I have been making overtures to several individuals who have no love of the Usurpers and I'm hoping that I can ferment an alliance between them and the Obertus Abbey in hopes of keeping the Tremere weak or driving them from the city all together.
I have further status reports on the progress of our bloodline, the Revenant family remains small currently, but we are already beginning to see progress with the youngest members of the new generation, which means that hopefully in a decade or two their numbers should be bolstered sufficiently. The herds have also been well maintained, in particular through the caring for the poor and the needy within Carcassonne, a process that has been far more effective with the influx of refugees. All the preparations are complete, I believe that it will be ready to be left under the care of your grandchilder, and hopefully if all fares well her own childer.
Do not worry yourself on the state of my soul, you have taught me well and since my lapse in judgement I have been increasingly vigilant and gone through the proper rites of starvation and repentance, though I fear the nightmares have intensified, as each morning I awake to find that my flesh has boiled into demonic forms or even twisted into the face of the Usurper himself.
I await further instructions,
your childer,
Gaius Menas Pelagius

Dear Gaius,
We have gathered to discuss your next order, and it has been decided that due to your lapse of judgement (may god have mercy on your soul) and the excellent progress made by your abbey that it is best that you should move on to look for another site to set up another Obertus safehouse and repository of knowledge. It has yet to be decided where this next abbey should be placed, however in the mean time we feel it best that you should remain travelling in the mean time as an itinerant monk. Take with you only enough Herd and Followers to establish a new Abbey, as well as some of the Revenants that have been entrusted to you, Anna is to remain in charge of the Abbey, while some here worry that she is far too young for such a responsibility I have faith in your teachings and her ability. Given the situation with the Usurpers, we will most likely be dispatching one or two more of our number to the Abbey alongside their various retainers to reinforce our foot hold.
As for the state of your soul, remember what our Lord Dracon and Gesu have taught us, remember what the scriptures have taught us and the lessons that I instilled in you and you will remain upon the right path. Despite the doubts that some among our number have of you, you have proved to be as dedicated to the cause and perhaps more effective than many of the supposedly more pious members of our number. Remember your Faith and remain strong.
Your Sire,
Celsus Obertus

To Catch the Little Foxes - Carcassone Summer 1209

Extracts from the Journal of Subject Gaius Menas Pelagius of the Obertus

Extract 88-92

6th May 1209
The situation in Carcassone does not bode well for my project, which is still young. Thanks to the help of Alyias (who I now owe several boons) and other individuals, I have managed to establish myself and my abbey over the last few years. However, the prospect of the coming crusade fills me with dread. I remember Constantinople half a decade ago, and I remember the destruction the crusade inflicted there. I have continued my efforts to help the local populace through contributing to local hospitals, providing care for the poor and destitute, taking in those who wish to embrace the life of the cloth and other acts of charity. The Cathar Perfecti are most fascinating in their practices, such as the idea of Consolamentum and Dualism, further their interpretations of doctrine are perhaps the most interesting of sects that I have found to date. The branding of these holy men and women, who I agree are not perfect and often naive (their attack on the practice of Eucharist is still somewhat grating), but they are not dangerous or even misguided like the church claims, these are good and holy men and women, the motivations behind this crusade is as ever greed, jealousy and the fear that such simple people make the gaudy nature of the Catholic Church look tarnished and stained in comparison.
I swear, if I find Sir Godwin is responsible I will tear his head from his body and - and cast what's left over to the birds. The Usurpers are also in the city, our clans are technically at war and unlike in Constantinople their position here is somewhat more fortified. They also outnumber my clan, meaning that I'm going to have to be careful as they may move against me to claim greater 'glory' for themselves.

Extract from MS. Bilbao 223.48 A neglected history of the Cathar Wars. Here after known as MS Bilbao.

And so the Lords of France, blessed in their mission by God gathered at the city of Avignon. There to await the day and hour whence they would set out and crush the enemies who so despise our Lord Jesus. From across Christendom LM knights and more gathered, to do God’s work and cleanse the vile taint from the lands. And so came the appointed day, trumpets sounded and the mighty host marched forth singing Te Deum and praising the Lord. Their march was to Beziers, a fortified town with many towers. This simple city was like a rotten fruit, ready to burst if squeezed with all the world vileness and corruption. The city stank with the presence of Cathar heretics and Jews. The Army of God, like a gardener had come to remove the foul fruits so as to save the orchard.

Letter from Subject Esclarmonde the Black to Subject Alexander.

Most noble friend.

I find that matters in the County of Toulouse, as no doubt you are well aware are keeping me from the activities of you court. Oh how I wish that I could attend for you and the other members of our two great clans bring such joy to my heart when reveling in festivities there. I therefore apologise most sincerely at my enforced absence. However if you would so desire my return most verily, then you have the power at your disposal to turn King Phillip and those who now make war on my people, to turn aside. I entreat you that you would do as our Lord Christ would want you. The public scourging of Count Raymond was enough for the Holy Father, must I too perform such a ceremony to prove my position?

Well. The city (if anything smaller than a country can be called a city, after Constantinople) of Carcassone is a city of Toreador, with all that implies – backbiting, pettiness, and snide arrogance abound here. Khleda fell to frenzy, as did Alais – even I was hard pressed to contain it.
Still, this place not be entirely without merit. I have met a quite interesting fellow – a Brujah, out of Spain. Though he holds some reverence for God, this does not interfere overmuch with his mind or his manners, as it does with so many – after a brief period of frenzy following an insult to his spiteful deity, he was positively apologetic, even eager to take a rational and civil discussion. Still, I shall not discount some ulterior motive – if known for one thing, it is that the faithful will stop at no line to further the purposes and plans of that towering, tottering edifice they call a church.
Neither am I alone. The lady Irenie is yet another retiring academic, content to sit in a cemetery while Elysium is held in her absence. By all accounts, however, she has a penchant for taking walking corpses as servants. I shall go forth into the night, and find her – by all accounts, she frequents a Jewish graveyard on the other side of the town.
First, however. One man (a foolish Christian knight of the Grail) has got himself cut down, cast into torpor. So I shall exercise the powers of Mortis to reawaken him, and see if any good and Christian gratitude is forthcoming. I suspect that it shall not; still perhaps others will recognise his ingratitude, and they will know I am... capable. I shall consider it an investment in... advertising.

So, it seems as though a new collection of country Kindred have made their home in the city. One claims kinship here, but her actions speak otherwise. They bring with them the filth of the East, one can smell the grave soil upon him. This should not complicate matters too much. Ceoris should be sending other members of the House soon. The location of what we seek will soon be known.

I suggest you watch the new arrivals, the Brujah’s inability to follow polite etiquette will not be tolerated by me for long. Victor has already spoken to me on the matter. So the army of God came upon a den of those little foxes that ran through the vineyard of the Lord. Outside the city of Beziers in the county of Toulouse they set camp and did lay siege to the city. All the heretic Cathars of the land did flee before the glorious host of Christ and retire behind the walls of this city. There were some XM defenders in the city, garrisoning its walls and manning its mangonels. The Abbot of Citeaux held council with the other leaders of the army, including the Lord Simon de Montfort. They sent messengers out to the city to ask it to come to terms, the heretic ribalds who had come to the city mocked the delegation and called them many foul things. Thus rebuffed the army of God attacked, laying many ladders against the walls. Fire poured down from the towers and many were slain on both sides. Many siege machines were created and hurled mighty stones against the wall. Cut off from outside help the people of the city began to starve, great was their woe, for they had rebelled against the teachings of the Prince of Peace, and He now turned his face away.

The Viscount Raymond Roger assembled in the city of Carcassone a great host, who intended to come to the aid of Beziers. He rode out with some CCC knights and raided the area about the encamped army, but due to the faith of the host they could not come near. After a week they retreated back to Carcasonne.

It would appear that matters here continue at a celeritous pace. An envoy from Mithras and Baronies of Avalon has arrived in the city; he hopes to place a Plantagenet in Toulouse I shouldn’t wonder. Henri d’Evreux, a lap dog of Alexander, or is it Geoffrey has also come from Paris. I fear that Esclarmonde’s appeals may be falling on deaf ears. Matters continue, Margaritte has made some interesting in roads. Though I can not fathom why she focuses upon that Grave Robber Xavier.

Letter 2 between Subject Gullieme and Subject Marianne.

Marianne,

That Brujah whelp has once again defied the laws that the Queen has laid down. If he should break them once more then I may take the dispensing of punishment into my own hands. The laws must be obeyed, I will not permit the usurpation of the Courts rights or allow anyone to destabalise Esclarmonde’s reign here. We have enough enemies already. I do not trust the Henri d’Evreux, he stinks of Ettiene of Poitou and his machinations.

Most noble of friends, though for how much longer I may call you that I know not.

Your subjects have assembled armies and have besieged the cities of my land. I am torn between my love and loyalty to you, and the responsibilities that I owe to my people. I am placed in a situation that none may envy. I therefore appeal to you one last time to call off this venture. Cease this war so that no more innocent blood may be shed. If you are truly concerned over the fate of the lost souls of the heretics, then there are other courses that might be tried.

Sire, I have safely arrived in the city of Carcasonne and established amicable relations with the ruling house here. I not a few old faces are here too, though I doubt that they shall prove to be a threat of any serious nature. I work towards the aims that you have laid upon me. Esclarmonde it seems is in some trouble. She is beset upon all sides by numerous factions and seeks assistance against the army of God who has marched into her lands. Her pleas fall on deaf ears in the Great Court of Paris. She as you suspect has many enemies there. There is much to be gained here as you suspected. If the army proceeds further then she will become desperate. I have contacted the Bishop of Narbonne, he has various tastes that must be suitably catered for.

Bitter Crusade - Constantinople March/April 1204

Extract from MS Skopje.

Unrestrained in their desire to conquer the Queen of cities, the Godless Franks plotted and schemed to do her injury. Across land they sent armies of hundred to ravage and burn all they found. Their ships plied the waves, destroying all they came into contact with. The Emperor Alexius V, known as Murzulphus because of his eyebrows, rode out to meet them where possible. Spies were captured examining the walls, or washed up on shore after some battle at sea. Other prisoners were taken by the army, and escorted in chains back to Constantinople. To strike fear into the barbarians hearts, Murzulphus had them placed upon the city walls facing the Venetian fleet and Frankish encampment, and there he had them burnt, their screams resounding across the waves.

Angered further by this, the Franks gathered their ships, lashing them together and building mighty towers of wood onboard. Mighty siege engines capable of hurling the largest of stones were built. The leaders met and determined how the spoils of future conquest were to be distributed. From the leaders they voted amongst themselves, and chose Baldwin the Count of Flanders to be the new Emperor. The Marquis Boniface of Montferrat was most displeased, but swore to adhere to the decision. The old Doge of Venice Enrico Dandalo, was to receive numerous gifts, and his city a portion of the city.

My Lord,

I have had the particular matter of the missing Lascari family members looked into. As far as can be discerned there appears to be no obvious and overt political motive. They do not rank highly enough to have been a target for Assamites or Keltoi murderers. The perpetrators of this crime were kindred though, a pair of them. Yet their specific identities remain unknown. Rumours suggest perhaps it was the work of Alfonzo or even those amongst Magnus’s family. I shall leave the decision on further matters to you.

Sires, I write this hastily since I fear the worst for the city and will be unsure as to when fate may next permit me to update you with information. All is as planned. The Count of Flanders and the Marquis of Montferrat are in accord, though I fear the Marquis is less than satisfied with the outcome. His family has coveted it for sometime and now it has been snatched away from him. Needs must though. The ships and other materials are ready. You have your part to play, and the rewards in the new administration will be most ample for you and your brethren.

Gabirella still remains though, her haven is deserted. I understand that you have ways in which she might be found. Perhaps you might look into it.

Alfonzo

Extract from MS Skopje.

And so the horde of barbarous Franks came to the city walls, assailing them with ladders and rocks. Many times they were driven back. Taking council on what to do, they lashed many ships together and built huge towers of wood covered in ox hide on top of them. These they sailed right up to the city walls and after much fighting captured the towers and gates of the city. The city flew into a panic; people ran and sought shelter in the Churches and other holy places. The Franks in their murderous rage against the Greeks stormed through the city, killing all who stood before them. They set fire to houses and church alike, and upon entering those sacred places took from them the holy relics and items. Murzulphus, with what remained of the Imperial army fled northwards. The Franks came to the Hagia Sophia and there upon the throne of the Patriarch placed a prostitute. This Harlot they then proclaimed Empress and carried her about. Thus after three days and nights of violence, the Queen of Cities, the fair Constantinople lay in ruins and a possession of the accursed Franks.

Her face...
Her screaming...
My fault... all my fault...

Such foolishness. I know not what foul spell that demon-worshipping harpy cast upon me, but I know it plunged my soul into darkness. Still, I cannot live my life by her illusions; if Sarah burns in Hell, then God (in all his infinite and twisted ill humour) is really all that I claim him to be, and infinitely less. But enough of this; Constantinople is under siege! The fleet of Frankish crusaders make war upon the walls of the city, though they have yet to take the chain wall. For three knights, now, the fleet has thrown rocks at the walls, and sent troops against the towers, and still to no avail. Further, Alexia is gone from the city, for all I can tell. I had at first suspected that Marcus had done with her – but it seems that even he seeks to track her down – and in vain. Though I have failed in the technical sense, it would seem that the lady is safe. And I am free of her, when it comes to that.

Chaos and damnations! Elders are fools and murderers, brigands and madmen, one and all! Gregorius the Muse (curse that name and all who bear it!) has spent the passing years driving Michael to madness – that was the source of all of this! Fools and madmen and murderers!!
Very well – at peace, Xavier Hugo. I awoke tonight to a message from none other than Mica Vykos (and curse that mad monk, as well). He bade us go to Gesu and beg him to leave – or to release Symeon, at the least. We ran his petty errand, but it was not to my surprise that Gesu would not be moved – Elders are immutable, made mad and stupid by ages unchanging. Then, we emerged from the Obertus Monastery to find the city aflame: the Franks had broken through the wall. Thence followed and long and painful evening – blood, and chaos, and damnation. The crusaders rode through the streets, raping and burning all that came into their path; several times we came upon the so called 'Holy warriors' engaged in acts of undirected violence and lust. Some looted churches, while from others we had to defend a herd of naked women, who were being chased through the streets. And Khalida – damn that woman, sometimes! – Khalida's clan we caught in the act of amaranth. Talbot thrust his sword through Fredrickson's head, forcing him into torpor.
It was shortly after then when we stumbled upon Gregorius, who had carried with him the pain of a taste of ecstasy given to him by Michael for an eternity; it festered within him, this pain, becoming resentment and eventual, all-consuming hatred. The dream of Constantinople burned to ashes because of him; we left him in the amphitheatre, where he intended to greet the sun and end his suffering. Perhaps he met final death, and perhaps he has found some kind of peace – perhaps not. I hope only that he is not depending on God's mercy for his peace, for he will be disappointed.
And then... well.
We came upon Michael himself, in the church of the Archangel. He truly was insane – speaking of the future, of a dream reborn, of an escape from his state of being. Insanity. And then, Mary – the Baali – was brought into the church by Peter the Humble. We left them, then (though Gaius paused to crush Peter's frail chest), while Michael talked of his love for Mary, of his sorrow for abandoning her. What passed between them, I do not know – and, I suspect, none but Mary shall ever know.
We came to the House of Lamps, by the direction of Malachite, the Nosferatu elder. There, Gabriella offered us safe passage out of the city – in return for the death of Alfonso. Surprise of surprises – Alfonso had orchestrated much of the fall (aided by Albertorius, among others) and declared himself the new Prince. Khalida and Gaius took his life, aided by Tremere magic gained from Fredrickson, in return for my returning him from the sleep.
So much has happened in one night. So many dead – Kindred and Kine! Gilliam is to meet us at the next village, bringing with me my books, my money, and the slaves I rescued from the party. Where next? We have yet to decide.

The assault is over. The city lies in ruins but the opportunities are now great, the Ventrue and Toreador are no more and the Tzimice have been shattered. Alfonzo is dead, a pity, he would have been a most useful asset in the new order. That Setitie Khalida Wench and her Tzimice lackey Gaius will no doubt come to harm as Fortuna’s wheel turns. Alexia remains hidden. Her disappearance will prove most troublesome. Never mind, there are now more important things.

Matters have changed alarmingly here in Constantinople. Alfonzo of Venice was but Prince of the city but for a short time after the Crusaders capture of it. He was murdered in his own Elysium by a Setite miscreant known as Khalida, and an abominable Obertus Tzimice called Gaius. They fled the scene rather than face the ire of the assembled Kindred, cowards as they are. I have the great sadness to report that Fletcher was involved in this assassination. He had provided some arcane arrows for the assassin to use against the noble Alfonzo. This action stands clearly in violation of our most esteemed Houses’ goals. I am sure you and the other members of the Council will see to it that he is dealt with according to our laws and customs.

Further to this, I have gained confirmation that Achmet, the Dreamer perished in the flames that ravaged this city, as did many of his foolish circles. There is one less infernalist Slaubri in this world for us to deal with. As for Theresa, she has yet to resurface.

Michael has not been seen and rumours from that stormy night indicate that he may have met final death, along with his city. I shall continue to observe and confirm these reports.

It was the spring of 1204 when the dream that was Constantinople flickered and died. Michael fell (at the hands of Mary the Black, as far as anyone can tell); Alfonso, usurper-Prince, died under the hands of Gaius the Tzimisce. The five of us (myself, Khleda of the Followers of Set, Alais of the Michaelite Toreador, Fredrickson Fletcher the Tremere, and Gaius of the Obertus Tzimisce) took ship into the river, and to safety.
We picked up Gilliam at a nearby village, and set down to plan. Gaius was insistent that we rescued the books from his monastery, and much as I detested any house of God, even I baulked at the loss of all that knowledge. Thus, we spent several months in hiding with Khleda, travelling out in raiding parties. We went in through the sewers or along the river bed, avoiding guards and our fellow Kindred, and stealing away the knowledge of the Obertus.
In the mid summer of that year, Khleda announced her intention to return to Jerusalem, to meet with Lucius. I had no desire to return to that place, and so I bid my companions farewell for a time, and journeyed to the monastery at Erciyes. It was not the guidance of priests I sought (not that I thought at the time, anyway), but the counsel of my clan's elder, Constancia. Though she was most displeased to hear of my failure with Alexia, she was more content to hear that Giovanni had not succeeded in his plan, either.
It was there, at Erciyes, that I first met Dolphus. A Frank, Dolphus had been a ghoul for almost a century before his master embraced him into the clan of grave robbers. Though he was almost three centuries my elder, I found a Kindred spirit in Dolphus: intelligent, calm, rational, given neither to passion nor a dependence on God. We spent many nights in discussion in the fortress of Erciyes, arguing everything from politics and thanatology to theology and academics.
But no pleasant times can last forever, and I was young and impatient. Though I much enjoyed the company of Dolphus, the life of Erciyes chafed at me – not least the presence of Constancia and others like her. And so, once again, the time came when I would bid goodbye to a companion. I left Dolphus with a means to communicate with me, and left the monastery, heading for the place where my other companions had found themselves – the European domain of Carcassonne.

June 12th 1204
It has been some months since I last wrote in this journal, Its not that events have been lacking in interest, in fact I should say that it is more a lacking of motivation to write down what has transpired these last few months. I suppose in a way, by not putting it to paper I could hope that the events that transpired were just an insidious twist to the nightmares of my day sleep, however, I have but to look in the archives of my memory and I clearly see what transpired. But I returned to my books this night, and raised my quill once again, for there is much to chronicle.
What was thought impossible has come to pass: Constantinople fell. It was put to flame and sword by the crusading francs, the horrors that I saw on the streets that day are so numerous that I could not write them all within the limited space of this tome, in my current condition I am used to violence... but this was something else. To say nothing for what was lost in the flames, the destruction of the Monastery of St. John Estudeus and our great library, the buildings and art work consumed in that terrible inferno. Churches were plundered, riches stripped from the walls and pillaged. But worst of all, the fates of so many people in the city. Untold numbers dead by sword or blaze, and that was the least of the crusaders crimes.
The dream is dead, what the clans Toreador, Ventrue and Tzimisce attempted to build in Constantinople is gone, nothing but ash on the wind. And all because of the selfishness and insanity of the elders, of petty human nature, vindictiveness, insanity and most of all greed. Because of the vendettas of individuals like Narses and their puppets Gregorious and Alfonso (there are many others I'm sure), Constantinople and all that it stood for is dead. Because of them dozens of kindred lives, and thousands of khine are dead or worse. And for what? Petty material gain or revenge. But the worst offender of all was Michael, perhaps the madness inflicted upon him by Gregorious was responsible, but I think not. Michael, the Patriarch, the man who made everything in this city; that I have loved from birth, to death and undeath, possible. It was his insane desire to reach apotheosis and become and arch-angel that everything occurred, he admitted to us that he let this all occur and that he had chosen his fate by the hands of Mary the Black, a Baali.
Even now the thought of the events that transpired fills me with a terrible anger, however, now that the fires cooled somewhat I have started to regret my actions on that day. When I strode from the Church I used my powers to collapse Peter the Humbles frail ribcage, right before Kalida laid him out with an axe. I shouldn't have lashed out against the man, yes, it was him who lead Mary to The Patriarch, and through his stupidity the Patriarch is gone. But I feel that maybe we should not have left him to die, he had no way of knowing what would occur, the poor man was an innocent. And while I did not kill him directly, I might has well have done.
Of course I'm getting ahead of myself, I should describe what first occurred that day.

We were brought before Myca Vykos at the Christ Prankator Monastery, Semyon had entreated me some weeks before to hear what Vykos was going to suggest out, and so I attended alongside Xavier the Cappadocians, Alyias of the Michaelite Toreador, Kalida of the Setites and Fredrickson Fletcher the Prince of Doormats (a Tremere Usurper). I waited with some trepidation, I don't always agree with Vykos's philosophical or theological opinions, but he was one of my elders and I have some trust in his judgement. Vykos stated that he believed the dream was coming to an end, that Constantinople was going to fall to the Crusaders, and that he and many other kindred were planning on leaving the city for other places. However, he could not leave the city without his beloved sire Semyon and that Semyon would not leave until his brother Gesu did and of course Gesu would not leave, believing that the monastery would be safe even if the Crusaders breached the walls. As such he tasked us with convincing Gesu to leave or at least convince Semyon to leave, Vykos then made a reference to otherwise he would be forced to take things into his own hands.
We approached the Monestary of St.John Estudeus, however the doors were barred and guarded by a pair of seven foot tall warghouls armed with halberds, who told us that none but those of the Obertus could enter. Our party conversed quickly, and we decided that while it was possible that I could speak to Gesu personally It would be impossible for someone of his order to change his mind, so it would be best if we found another entrance. I entered the Monastery, which despite the panic that had spread throughout the city remained busy in its usual sedate pace as always, which trust me was eerie at the time. After some searching I eventually found Cyricus who had been gathering fresh parchment for the scriptorium. I asked him to find some spare monks robes for about four or so individuals and meet me at the side gate. From there I had the others don robes and led them to the chambers of Gesu, where we had a short if somewhat pointless discussion with our esteemed Elder. While I believe that he was foolish to underestimate the franks, I could understand his position. The City had never fallen before, and his faith that the monastery would be protected by god and remain unmolested by the mortals was absolute. While I wish that I could possess such unshakable faith and conviction, I should hope that in my elder years I will not become so set in my ways that I calcify.
After that failure, we decided that it was time to part ways, it had become increasingly clear to us that Constantinople will fall, the odds were stacked too high against it... and I couldn't help but feel that there was some hand (or hands) that had been working against it this entire time. We gathered in my chambers, Xavier himself remarked that my austere style of living made living in crypts seem comfortable, which I informed him was something of the intention. Besides, after thirty seven odd years of doing so as one of the undead I'd become somewhat numb to such trivial matters as being uncomfortable. After some discussion, we decided that it was best that we follow many of our kin and leave the city while it was still possible, leaving myself and Xavier within the monastery.

< Fragment Resumes>

Since that tumultuous night myself, Kalida, Xavier and the Usurper have remained within the city, our safe passage assured. We have spent our days sleeping within the crypts under the monastery, or within sewers, with Celsus and Zozemus watching over our torpid dreams. Thanks to the gifts of Kalida and Celsus, we are able to walk largely unseen in the streets at night, for there are many kindred who still seek revenge after our slaying of the newly appointed prince Alfonso. Its wrong of me I know, but I still cannot help but smile and feel some sense of satisfaction at remembering how that smug grin of his was wiped from his face the moment Kalida's arrow punched through him or the sickening crunch as I used my gifts to shatter his bones. Unlike say Peter the Humble or other individuals whose lives I have taken directly or otherwise, who I feel remorse and pity over, I feel none for him.
We've spent these few months searching the ruins of the Monastery of St. John Esteudeus and the Library of the forgotten for whatever books we could rescue, from there on we moved to the many other shrines, abbys and monasteries within the city, storing the books in oil cloth in various locations. After we'd exhausted these options we moved to searching Crusader camps, stealing back what we could, or picking them up from black markets. Its nothing compared to what we have lost, but everything we uncover is in its own way a tiny shard of the dream that can be reforged anew, I memorise the contents of each book we recover as best I can, adding it to the growing library in my mind. After the night that the dream was finally broken, and Michael died alongside so many others, I found my faith most shaken and despair clung to me. However, these few months of camaraderie have set me back upon the path, I am still troubled by the death and horror that surrounded us that night and my hope is still a fragile thing, but we carry the dream with us, each in our own way and so long as we live we can build it again. If there's anything in this world we have, its time.
I'm somewhat thankful to Malachite, Baron Veroux and Natalys. Despite how frustrating their efforts seemed at the time, their theft in fact allowed us to save far more than we ever would have during those last few panicked hours. I'm grateful... and I hope that like us they too carry the dream with them. I wonder where Natalys is now? I'm surprised she could even leave Constantinople, given how much she loved it. Perhaps we'll cross paths again sometime in the future?
Back to the matter at hand, after some discussion last night, we've decided that we have done as much as we can here in Constantinople. We've arranged for transport further afield, I believe that Xavier will be travelling to Mount Eresies to study with the members of his clan (I'm somewhat envious of him, his entire clan are brilliant scholars. Where as the majority of what’s left of mine are nothing more than barbaric warlords with pretence to nobility. Alas), The Usurper will be travelling back to Ceoris (the accursed place still stands apparently) and Kalidah has invited me to travel with her to Jerusalem. I'm positively ecstatic about the idea of travelling to the holy city, if I still could I would be getting goose pimples just thinking about it. I have gathered my retainers and followers, once the moon rises tomorrow we begin our journey. It will be sad to leave the city of my birth, my beloved Constantinople, but I cannot bear to see it in its current state, maybe some day in the future I will return to it. But until then, I must walk the pilgrims path.

August 7th, 1204
As you may no doubt have noted from the previous entries, my time in Jerusalem has been well spent. I feel my faith flowing through me once again, its as if my heart is wreathed in flame and has begun beating once more. Using what little money I have I'd managed to buy a relic or two here and there, while these are quite probably the work of charlatans, I suppose that’s part of getting into the spirit of the thing. We've had to cut our visit short however, something that Celsus was most upset about, as it seems that our guide Kalidah has encountered some … problems while within the city. She assured me that she had departed to visit a lover from her time in Jerusalem (to have spent such time here seems impossible! You can feel the power of faith blazing here on every street corner, while not as beautiful as Constantinople, its almost as if we are under the gaze of God himself!), however but a night later and a decree citing her banishment and bloodhunt was released. I didn't ask the particulars on the situation, though given the reaction of Mr. Talbot I'm starting to think that these extreme expressions of love are not uncommon for Kalidah. I wonder how Natalys is doing?
Anyway, Kalidah and I have decided to part ways now, as she travels to her clans spiritual centre and I have decided to travel and meet up with the surviving members of the Obertus. My time here has not been wasted, I have garnered many favours from the kindred of the city through the use of my gifts. Largely I accepted boons of goods, coin or works of academia as my stay was short, it appears that Tzimisce are somewhat rare in this part of the world and few of my clan have passed through the area of late. Now me and my followers head towards the Balkans to reunite with Semyon and help in re-establishing ourselves, I'm sure Semyon will be most impressed with what we've managed to rescue. As with Xavier and Fletcher, I gave Kalidah a small gift of some of the books we had rescued to display my gratitude (after I had read them of course), and bid her safety on her journeys, normally I would have said Gods grace, but I'm not sure that that would be welcomed by the Children of Set. We depart in the morning, though I will be safely absconded, upon leaving Constantinople I made sure to gather several urns worth of earth and store them in various wagons, just in case. I have a contact who might be able to provide me some more in an emergency. it will be a long journey to the Balkans and I plan on spending some years there before travelling to meet Alyias.

January 2nd 1206
These last two years have been long ones, I have spent the majority of the time in the scriptorium or attending to the health of the locals who require it. It took me some time and much arguing, but finally my colleagues acquiesced on the subject of providing more support and protection to the leity of these lands, as disciples of God we should know better than to express the cruel tendencies of many of the other members of our clan, we are not to be tyrants. I have enough members of the Obertus support the idea within this particular Monastery that it should continue in my absence. Have even managed to get members of the clan in other Monasteries interested in the scheme, if only as part of a ploy to improve our defences against the activities of the more warlike Viovodes of the surrounding territories. To think that we would be squabbling among ourselves even as the Usurpers and the Warlords make war on us. Typical. This is the kind of behaviour that brought beloved Constantinople to its knees, the madness of Elders does not fail to fill me with pity and disgust once more. If not also sorrow... it has been two years, and still my heart is heavy with the thought of the deaths in Constantinople and the horror wrought by Kindred and Mortal pettiness.
I have come to the conclusion that it it not enough merely to rebuild the dream, for there are still those who would destroy it out of spite and jealousy. Part of the rebuilding must be the removal of those who destroyed its previous incarnation, not in the name of petty Vengeance or a skewed sense of Justice, but instead so that this new dream can blossom unhindered. As much as I may hold this up as the ideal, I know that in no small part will this also be out of revenge for the deaths they inflicted on the mortals and my clan. There are many individuals involved in this conspiracy and many of them are powerful in their own ways, but I have centuries to slowly enact my response. Narses and Sir Godwin are two main targets, Narses for his creation and sending of Alfonso and Sir Godwin for his inspiring of the idea in the mortals. I know Natalys would shake her head and despair at my childish desire for revenge, and many days I do so too... but I cannot let them destroy the new dream.
My plan is somewhat simple, I intend to gather my retainers and followers once spring comes, and travel for Carcassone where I heard Alyias is currently dwelling. I have accrued some wealth in the last few years, and alongside my efforts in the scriptorium I have enough copies of books we've lost or rescued to take with me to start anew. My intention is not to build large monasteries like the one I dwell in now, this would be taxing and too prone to failure. Instead, I plan on establishing a series of smaller Abbeys nd orders as we travel, these Abbeys will be dedicated to my interpretations on the Obertus Philosophy and the maintaining of our knowledge, as well as works of charity and aide for the local populace. I intend to create a small community surrounding these abbeys with its holdings and livestock to make a sustainable population, once one abbey is set up, I intend to leave them in the care of my childer and move on to another location and establish a new Abbey. With this process I should create a network of location that can serve to spread the Obertus further than our current concentration. For this task I have gathered a small number of Revenants to start the family, and my current Childer the Slavic nun Anna. We will have to adjust our doctrine to Catholic standards to blend in, though I intend on keeping a private shrine beneath the Abbey for my own practices.
Carcassone will be our first test... I have heard tell of the so called Cathar sect there, and I'm interested to see what I can learn from its doctrine and practices. What little rumour and here-say I've heard suggests that its spiritualistic leanings could be incredibly interesting and bear similarity to that of the Obertus.
